The Cueva del Arroya del Corazon Expedition, 1925

Not having accomplished anything significant during the exploring season, we decided to search for a fabled mountain crypt. This was only expeditionary, a reconnaissance. We didn’t even know exactly where it was or even if it existed. It was October 29th and there was already snow in the mountains.

Local Natives call it Cueva del Arroya del Corazon (Though, where they learned Spanish, I could not hazard a guess). The Heart Creek Cave. They also told us to stay far away from it, as they considered it cursed. Of course, we don’t believe in curses.

The hike was gentle, though long and vigorous. Very crisp air.

We weren’t mislead, for a change, and found the cave exactly where it was supposed to be!

I sparked up my torch and wandered inside, hoping hard that there were no predatory beasts inside, like cougars or bears. Near everything is afraid of fire, so that was on our side.

There was a long tunnel that had at least five separate chambers shooting off from the main barrow.

We had a very uneasy feeling we couldn’t explain. It felt a little like someone was watching. We passed it off as overwrought imagination.

With torch fuel running low, we decided to exit the cave and return to daylight.
I’ve taken a lot of notes about the location and features, perhaps we can gather a larger team to explore the cave more thoroughly next season.
